How to manage vomiting caused due to norovirus infection?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am currently writing this message from a cruise ship where a large number of passengers, including my entire family, are unwell. The illness began with my children, and now both my wife and I are experiencing persistent vomiting. The ship's doctor has diagnosed the situation as norovirus, yet we still have five days remaining on this voyage. We are confined to our cabin, unable to consume any food, and depleting our supply of medication. My youngest child is showing signs of dehydration, and the medical center is overwhelmed with cases. Should we consider disembarking at the next port?

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and can understand your concern.

Based on your symptoms, it appears that you may be experiencing food poisoning, potentially linked to an enterovirus. I recommend that you and your family visit the nearest emergency room for further evaluation. In the meantime, please mix salt and sugar in a bottle of water and ensure that everyone stays hydrated by drinking it as much as possible. If you have access to an injection of promethazine or Plasil (1cc), it may help to prevent vomiting. Additionally, consider administering intravenous ciprofloxacin (500ml) for each individual to address the underlying cause of the vomiting. Should you have any further questions or concerns, please feel free to schedule a direct appointment or reach out via chat, phone, or video consultation.

I hope this information helps you.

Thank you.
