Patient's Query
Hello Doctor,
Our daycare just called about a norovirus outbreak, and my three-year-old twins have been throwing up nonstop since yesterday. One of them has a fever of 102°F and has not had a wet diaper in eight hours. I am a single dad and do not know how to handle both sick children at once. Should I take them to the emergency room or try to manage their care at home? What is the most important thing to do to keep them hydrated? I am also starting to feel nauseous myself and am worried about what will happen if I become too sick to care for them.
Kindly help.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I have read your query and can understand your concern.
Based on what you have described—persistent vomiting, a high fever of 102°F, and no wet diaper for over eight hours,
I recommend taking your child to a pediatric emergency department as soon as possible. These are signs of moderate to severe dehydration, which can worsen quickly in young children, particularly during viral gastroenteritis.
At the hospital, medical staff can begin oral or intravenous rehydration without delay, monitor electrolyte levels, and ensure your child is stable and safe. This is the best way to prevent complications and reduce the stress on you as a caregiver.
While at home, I suggest that you give small, frequent sips of oral rehydration solutions the key to preventing dehydration even if they vomit after some attempts. However, in your case, it appears that one of your twins has already passed the point where home care may be effective or safe.
Additionally, since you are beginning to feel unwell yourself, seeking help now is even more important. Getting care for your children early will provide you with a better chance to recover and continue caring for them safely.
Please do not hesitate—go to a pediatric emergency room now, and allow the medical team to help share this burden with you. You are doing the right thing by acting quickly.
I hope this helps.
Thank you.
