Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
We have an emergency at our college dormitory. I am 20 years old, and ever since last night’s cafeteria dinner, our entire floor has turned into a war zone. I have not been able to keep anything down for 24 hours, even ice chips come right back up. My roommate collapsed in the shower from dehydration and needed intravenous fluids. The scariest part is the dizziness. I had to crawl to the bathroom last time. Our resident assistant suspects norovirus since the symptoms have spread so quickly. Our final examinations are next week, and I can barely lift my head. How can we stop this from spreading?
Kindly help.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I understand your concern.
I am sorry to hear that you and your dormitory floor are going through such a difficult situation. Norovirus spreads incredibly fast, especially in close quarters like a dorm, but with some precautions, you can help prevent further transmission. It is also crucial to take care of yourself to avoid worsening dehydration or exhaustion. To reduce the spread, try to isolate yourself as much as possible by staying in your room and avoiding common areas, classes, and social spaces until you feel better.
Practicing good hygiene is essential wash your hands frequently with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, as it is the most effective method against norovirus. If soap and water are unavailable, use a hand sanitizer containing at least 60 percent alcohol. Disinfect frequently touched surfaces like doorknobs, light switches, and bathroom counters using bleach-based cleaners. When handling contaminated items, use gloves or paper towels and dispose of waste in a sealed bag or trash can. Hydration is a top priority, as symptoms like dizziness, vomiting, and diarrhea can quickly lead to severe dehydration.
If symptoms worsen or you experience severe dizziness, fainting, chest pain, difficulty breathing, or reduced urination, seek medical help right away. Rest as much as possible, even though finals are approaching—your health must come first. Inform your professors about your illness in case accommodations are needed. Additionally, notify the campus health center about the outbreak so they can implement proper sanitation measures. Encourage your dorm mates to take similar precautions to prevent the virus from spreading further. Stay hydrated, monitor your symptoms closely, and do not hesitate to visit urgent care or the emergency room if necessary. Your health is the top priority—get well soon!
I hope this helps you.
Thank you.
