Can the jaw return to its original form without surgery?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am a 20-year-old female. Recently, I used a jaw trainer for 30 minutes, hoping to widen my face. However, it made my face appear narrower. How long does it take for the skull to return to its original position without orthodontic treatment or jaw surgery?

Please advise.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

All jaw trainers and DIY (do-it-yourself) orthodontic treatments should be used with caution, keeping potential side effects in mind. You opted to use jaw trainers because you feel your face has become narrow and wish to widen it. At your age, expanding the jaws or altering facial width using DIY appliances is nearly impossible. Facial growth occurs in three directions: transverse (width), sagittal (length), and vertical (height). Transverse growth is the first to complete, followed by sagittal and then vertical growth.

In females, facial growth typically ceases by 13 to 14 years of age. Based on the information you provided, you are 20 years old. Therefore, jaw trainers or similar devices are unlikely to produce the desired results. If you wish to achieve facial or jaw expansion, consider fixed orthodontic appliances placed inside the mouth or surgical intervention, depending on your specific condition.

Kindly let me know if you underwent a dental examination before starting with the jaw trainers. I also need to assess your facial width and dental condition to provide you with more precise and personalized advice. Please share the following photographs for a better assessment:

  1. Facial photographs (neutral expression and smiling).
  2. Frontal photographs of your teeth.

Please answer so I can guide you better, and please feel free to reach out for further information or clarification.

Wishing you good health and all the best!
