What is the effective and safe treatment for fractures?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am a 55-year-old postmenopausal woman who was told I have osteoporosis after a bone density scan. I have already had two fractures in the past three years. I am taking calcium and vitamin D supplements, but my doctor mentioned stronger treatments like bisphosphonates or injections.

I am also concerned about side effects like jaw problems, which I read about. Which treatment is safest and most effective for preventing more fractures?

Please help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

I will let you know one thing that bisphosphonates have really no side effects in major cases, as shown on the internet, and the internet shows rare side effects also, but in reality, it is not so prevalent, and bisphosphonates are one of the best medicines to heal and make your bones stronger, a level up than calcium and vitamin D supplements.

I will also suggest you go ahead with that, and yes, post menopause, it is really important to have this because due to menopause, bones become weak and very prone to any fractures, so please go ahead with the treatment, and jaw problems as a side effect is one of the rarest ones.

Age-related changes, as well as menopause, make your bones weaker, and joint pain increases; therefore, it is better to take it. One more thing, bisphosphonates are given in the form of an injection, so you need not worry about that. Also, it is a normal way to take medicine. Trust your doctor and go ahead with the treatment, and also consume food that helps in the absorption of calcium easily, and also have good vitamin D daily in the morning.

I hope this helps.

Please follow up if you have any further concerns.

Thank you.
