Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I increased my dose to 50 milligrams of Trazodone for sleep. During the night, I had a mild painful erection that I ignored. Then when I woke up, I still had a painful erection. However, the erection went away. My penis just felt a little sore. I have been worried for the whole day, because of the mild soreness, as well as not getting an erection. I have read stories online of people having permanent tissue damage and having their penis removed or having erectile dysfunction because of this medication. For the record, I have been on Trazodone 25 milligrams for three weeks. Last night I increased my dose to 50 milligrams, that one time caused that mild painful erection. Is this something that the body heals? Or did I get permanent damage to my penis?

Thank You

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and understand your concern.

Primarily it seems to be tablet Trazodone-induced priapism (painful erections). How are you now, is still a painful erection present, if it is more than four hours you need to be concerned about it. You can stop taking Trazodone and replace it with some other alternative drug that is not causing priapism by consulting your doctor If you still have a painful persistent erection, you need to visit nearby emergency services, they may give some medication or intra-penile aspiration and injection.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I took a dose of 50 milligrams of Trazodone for sleep and had a mild painful erection that lasted for an unknown number of hours while I was asleep. By the time I woke up and started moving around, the erection had resolved itself. I am currently experiencing a slight soreness and difficulty in getting an erection. At the moment, my penis looks normal and the soreness is very mild. It does not seem urgent enough to warrant an emergency room visit, especially since there is no visible issue or severe pain. However, I am deeply worried about having permanent damage to my penis from this event. I understand priapism, if untreated for several hours, can lead to tissue damage. Could this have been the case with my situation even though the erection was resolved on its own?

Since this event, I have decided to stop taking Trazodone. I have noticed a slight pain during the one or two brief, soft erections I had since, but it was tolerable. Given that there is no immediate sign of severe damage and the pain is mild, is this something that the body can heal from over time, or should I be worried about any potential long-term damage? Please bear in mind that since there is no immediate cause for concern, it is not practical for me to schedule a doctor's visit at the moment.

Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and understand your concern.

Mostly it should get resolved and be less likely to cause permanent damage. If there is no persistent penile erection and that episode has resolved. There is no need for an emergency visit.f you are able to get a normal erection after that event it is a good sign of reverting to normalcy.
