What causes frequent, heavy, and painful periods?
Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I have gotten my period for the third time this month, but this time, it is much heavier and more painful than usual. I already have irregular, heavy, and painful periods, but this feels different. I am passing more blood clots than normal, and the bleeding has lasted for seven days with constant pain.
Kindly suggest.
Thank you.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I read your query and can understand your concern.
Experiencing your period three times in one month, especially with heavier bleeding, increased clotting, and intense pain, could indicate an underlying issue such as a hormonal imbalance, endometriosis, adenomyosis, or uterine fibroids. Conditions like PCOS (polycystic ovarian syndrome), thyroid disorders, or perimenopause can lead to irregular and excessive bleeding, while fibroids or polyps may cause heavy periods with large clots.
If your cramps are severe and unrelieved by painkillers, endometriosis or adenomyosis could be a factor.
Additionally, excessive blood loss can lead to anemia, causing weakness, dizziness, or fatigue. If you've recently taken emergency contraception or changed birth control, irregular bleeding may also be a side effect.
To manage symptoms, track your bleeding (number of pads or tampons used), stay hydrated, get enough rest, and use OTC (over-the-counter) pain relievers like Ibuprofen to reduce discomfort. Applying heat to your lower abdomen and taking iron supplements can help if you are feeling weak.
However, if you are soaking through pads or tampons every hour, passing large clots, feeling lightheaded, or experiencing unbearable pain, seek medical attention immediately. Since your bleeding has lasted for seven days and is more severe than usual, seeing a gynecologist for an ultrasound and blood tests is recommended to identify the cause and receive appropriate treatment.

Thank you and take care.
