What is the treatment for parasomnia?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have been having some strange experiences during sleep lately, and I am a bit concerned. Sometimes I wake up in the middle of the night and find myself doing things that I don't remember, like sleepwalking or even sleep talking. It has been happening quite frequently, and I am not sure what's causing it. I have heard about something called parasomnias could these symptoms be related to that? I have also heard about a specific parasomnia called sleep sex, and while I haven't experienced anything like that, I am curious about what it is and how it is different from other sleep disorders. How common are parasomnias, and are there any specific triggers or risk factors I should be aware of? What can I do to help manage these symptoms and ensure a better night's sleep? Kindly help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I can understand your concern.

Parasomnias – These are unusual experiences or behaviors that occur during sleep; they include sleep terror disorder and sleepwalking (which occur during stage 4 sleep) and nightmare disorder (which occurs during rapid eye movement [REM] sleep). Sleep sex is also a part of its form, your more likely suffering from sleep-wake disorder. Use the bed for sleep and sex only (no television watching or reading in bed)

  1. Avoid caffeine, especially late in the day; avoid activities that will get you stimulated and upset late in the day; practice relaxation techniques before bedtime
  2. Exercise every day.
  3. Maintain a regular schedule for bedtime and wakening; avoid naps
  4. Do not watch the clock while in bed; avoid struggling to fall asleep in bed; instead, get up and spend quiet time out of bed until sleep comes
  5. Medical treatment is also Available with this, such as hypnotics.

I hope this information will help you.

Thank you.
