Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My grandpa was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease recently. I am trying to understand more about it. can you explain how it affects brain cells and mitochondrions? I read something about PGK1 too. is it related to neurodegenerative diseases? how does it impact daily life? thanks for your help! also, are there any new treatments available? grandpa's hands shake a lot and he has trouble walking. It is hard to see him struggle. is there anything we can do to make his life easier? What about diet or exercise?

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

I am so sorry to hear about your grandfather's condition. Parkinson's disease is a progressive disease of the nervous system caused by the dysfunction and death of specific cells that produce a chemical messenger called dopamine.

Dopamine is a critical messenger in the brain and its lack results in the dysfunction of nerve cells. Therefore, significant problems with movement, thinking, balance, speech, and memory may occur.

Slowness and tremors are the most common symptoms of the disease. Unfortunately, there is no cure for the disease, but medications can reduce the symptoms and are the only help for alleviating the problems associated with Parkinson's disease.

There is no specific diet or exercise prescribed for this condition. However, there is some evidence that gentle daily use of a stationary bike may provide some help in easing movement.

The best thing that you can do for your grandfather is to help him visit his physician on time and ensure that he takes his medications properly.

I hope this helps.

Kindly follow up if you have more concerns.

Thank you.
