What treatments are available for Parkinson's disease?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am reaching out because my 60-year-old father, who lives with me abroad, has been showing symptoms that worry me. He has been experiencing tremors, stiffness, slower movements, restlessness, and frequent worry. He has been diagnosed with Parkinson's disease and has been dealing with anxiety disorders, which seem to be affecting his mental health even more as he gets older. Could you provide some advice on managing both Parkinson's disease and anxiety in old age? Are there any treatments or strategies that could help improve his overall mental health and quality of life? Please help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and can understand your concern.

Parkinson's disease is a brain disorder that causes unintended or uncontrollable movements, such as shaking, stiffness, and difficulty with balance and coordination. Symptoms usually begin gradually and worsen over time. As the disease progresses, people may have difficulty walking and talking. Parkinson's disease cannot be cured, but medicines can help control the symptoms, often dramatically. In some more advanced cases, surgery may be advised. Levodopa, the most effective Parkinson's disease medicine, is a natural chemical that passes into the brain and is converted to dopamine. Levodopa is combined with Carbidopa (Lodosyn), which protects Levodopa from early conversion to dopamine outside the brain. This prevents or lessens side effects such as nausea. Kindly consult your doctor and take medicines accordingly.

I hope this helps.

Thank you and take care.

Regards.
