Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have had pcos for a year and have irregular periods that only come after taking Meprate 10 mg and Yasmin. But I was wondering if Metformin can help to cure insulin resistance in pcod or pcos, which can help to reduce weight? How much should I take?

Please advise.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

PCOD (polycystic ovarian disease) is a condition that causes irregular periods that are usually two to three months late due to hormonal imbalance. PCOD may be associated with obesity, but based on your weight of 32 kilograms and height of 5.3 feet, I do not think you will be able to lose weight. I would suggest you to get a fasting blood sugar and a postprandial blood sugar done to know if there is any insulin resistance. Then only tablet Metformin would be effective and would help you in curing the disease. Otherwise in such conditions you only required to have a hormone preparation which have to be taken regularly for three months under the guidance of the gynecologist that will regularise your hormonal imbalance and cycles.

Feel free for any other query if you have any doubt.

I hope this will help you out.

Thank you.
