Can Metformin tablets help with insulin resistance in PCOS/PMOS?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have had PCOS/PMOS for a year and have irregular periods that only come after taking Meprate 10 mg and Yasmin. But I was wondering if Metformin can help to cure insulin resistance in PCOS/PMOS

  1. Which can help to reduce weight?
  2. How much should I take?

Please advise.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

PCOS (polycystic ovary syndrome)/PMOS (polyendocrine metabolic ovarian syndrome) is a condition that causes irregular periods that are usually two to three months late due to hormonal imbalance. PCOS/PMOS may be associated with obesity, but based on your weight of 70.5479 pounds and height of 5.3 feet, I do not think you will be able to lose weight.

I would suggest that you get a fasting blood sugar and a postprandial blood sugar done to know if there is any insulin resistance. Then only tablet Metformin would be effective and would help you in curing the disease. Otherwise, in such conditions, you only require a hormone preparation which has to be taken regularly for three months under the guidance of a gynecologist who will regularise your hormonal imbalance and cycles.

Feel free to ask for any other queries if you have any doubts.

I hope this will help you out.

Thank you.
