Can one get a period after missing a Norethisterone dose?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I was on Nostra CR 15 as prescribed and took it for four days. However, I forgot to take the last dose and am now traveling outside Asia without my medication. I will return home in four days. I have PCOS or PMOS and followed the prescription correctly.

Will I still get my period after taking the medication for four days? What should I do next?

Please help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and can understand your concern.

Nostra CR 15 (Norethisterone 15 mg) is commonly prescribed for PCOS (polycystic ovary syndrome), now known as PMOS (polyendocrine metabolic ovarian syndrome),related irregular periods. Since you took it for only four days and missed the last dose, its effectiveness in inducing a period may be uncertain. Typically, withdrawal bleeding occurs for three to seven days after stopping the medication if taken for a sufficient duration (usually five to 10 days).

Since you are traveling and unable to take the missed dose, here is what you can expect:

1. You may or may not get your period; four days of medication might not be enough to trigger withdrawal bleeding, but this varies based on individual response.

2. If your period does not start within a week after stopping, consult your doctor when you return. They may recommend restarting the medication.

3. If you do get your period, you can continue with your usual PCOS or PMOS treatment as planned.

Would you like guidance on managing PCOS or PMOS symptoms while traveling? Additionally, sharing details like your height and weight may help assess your hormonal balance and provide personalized lifestyle recommendations.

I hope this helps.

Thank you and take care.
