How can irregular menstrual cycles be regularized?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I am experiencing some unusual issues with my menstrual cycle. Last month, instead of my period, I had spotting this month. I am feeling cramps, but I have not gotten my period yet. Based on my calculations, I should have started my period by now. I am feeling very worried about this. I have taken pregnancy tests using both test strips and blood tests, and they have come back negative.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Thank you for sharing your concerns regarding your menstrual cycle. Irregular periods and scanty menses could occur due to various reasons, including stress, recent illness, PCOS, or thyroid disorders. It is important to diagnose the underlying cause to start appropriate treatment.

  • I recommend a pelvic ultrasound (USG pelvis) to assess your reproductive system's health and check for any abnormalities or cysts. Additionally, a thyroid profile and complete blood count (CBC) should be done to rule out any thyroid abnormalities or anemia that could cause irregular periods.
  • Based on the findings of the tests, treatment can be planned accordingly. If polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is suspected, medications like Metformin or hormonal therapy may be recommended. If thyroid abnormalities are found, thyroid hormone replacement therapy may be prescribed.

I understand that this can be a stressful situation for you, and please know that you can ask any further questions or concerns. It is always important to consult a healthcare provider to ensure a proper diagnosis and effective treatment.

Thank you.
