Does Primolut N and Estelle affect oral contraceptives?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am taking Estelle and Primolut N medications to manage my PCOS/PMOS. But will these medicines impact the effectiveness of the birth control pill?

Please help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq,com.

I went through your query and understood your concern.

Primolut N (Norethisterone) is a medication containing the hormone progesterone, which is sometimes used to treat certain conditions such as irregular periods, endometriosis, or delayed periods. Estelle (progestogen and estrogen) is a combined hormonal contraceptive pill that contains both estrogen and progesterone. Taking Primolut N at the same time as Estelle may potentially decrease the effectiveness of the pill as your primary contraceptive method, as it can interfere with the hormonal balance provided by the pill. This may increase the risk of unintended pregnancy.

I hope this has helped you.

Thanks and regards.
