I took Meprate for missed period. Is brown discharge normal?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have PCOS or PMOS, which affects both ovaries. I used to have irregular periods. I got married, and after marriage, my periods became regular for four months. However, in the fifth month, my period was skipped, so I waited a week and took a home pregnancy test, which came back negative.

I retook the test days later, thinking the previous one was too early, but it was still negative. My doctor advised me to take Meprate tablets to induce my period. However, I noticed a brown discharge on the fourth day of taking it, which continued on the fifth day.

Is there a chance I could be pregnant? I do not have symptoms other than a missed period, but I am also worried if there is a bigger issue.

Kindly help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I can understand your concern.

Given your history of PCOS (polycystic ovary syndrome), now known as PMOS (polyendocrine metabolic ovarian syndrome), and the negative pregnancy tests, the likelihood of pregnancy is low, but not impossible. Brown discharge while taking Meprate is usually old blood from the uterine lining and may indicate that your body is responding to the medication.

PCOS often leads to hormonal imbalances, causing irregular periods. Meprate, a form of progesterone, is commonly prescribed to induce withdrawal bleeding. The brown discharge could be the beginning of that process. If it continues without a regular period, or if you are still concerned, consider discussing it further with your doctor.

I hope this helps you.

Thank you.
