How does metabolic surgery affect hormone balance in PCOS or PMOS?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) also known as polyendocrine metabolic ovarian syndrome (PMOS) and severe insulin resistance. No matter what I do, I am unable to lose weight. My gynecologist mentioned metabolic surgery as a possible option, but I am uncertain whether it would also help with my hormone imbalances.

Can metabolic surgery improve PCOS symptoms in addition to promoting weight loss, or is it primarily intended for diabetes management?

Kindly help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I can understand your concern.

PCOS (polycystic ovary syndrome), now known as PMOS (polyendocrine metabolic ovarian syndrome) is a condition characterized by hormonal imbalance, leading to symptoms such as irregular menstruation, hirsutism, and weight gain.

Metabolic surgery aids in weight management while also helping to regulate hormonal levels.

Advantages of metabolic surgery in PCOS or PMOS:

  1. Reduction of symptoms.

  2. Normalization of hormonal levels.

  3. Improved insulin response.

  4. Effective weight management.

  5. Enhanced fertility.

Although these benefits can be observed after surgery, the outcomes may vary from patient to patient. It is important to consult both your gynecologist and surgeon to gain a comprehensive understanding of the procedure's benefits, potential complications, and long-term effects.

I hope this information helps you.

Please let us know if you have any further queries.

Thank you.
