Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I have had moles or beauty marks on my genitals ever since I was a little kid, but some look different than others and I want to know a dermatologist's opinion. I will get diagnosed at the end of this week but at the moment I am in a different country and would like to be re-assured until the examination. I had recently been diagnosed with an inguinal hernia via online. This panicked me a lot because I have never had such an issue before and I went on the internet to look for other symptoms and causes. Should I be worried?.
Hi,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I understand your concern. These look like penile melanotic macules (attachment removed to protect the patient's identity). It is a benign acquired condition, which is not very uncommon. It presents as hyperpigmented macules over the penile shaft or glans. As it is a benign condition, there is nothing to worry about as such. There are no reports that it can lead to malignant transformation. These lesions are seen in both sexes. No treatment is usually required and regular observation is recommended. Report to the nearby dermatologist if you notice a sudden change in color, texture, or size. But that is unlikely. If one requires treatment for cosmetic reasons or is worried about it being malignant, excision with histopathological evaluation is offered. Normally as these are harmless, no treatment is offered. Unless of course, one wants to get them removed for cosmetic reasons. Take care.
