Can I get a tattoo while being treated for acute pericarditis?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I am 19 years old, and I seem to have had acute pericarditis for about two months now. I am currently on Colchicine and Ibuprofen for a little over three weeks. I am also taking iron supplements for mild anemia. I have a tattoo appointment tomorrow, and I wanted to ensure I can get it as long as I am cautious to prevent infection.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

You must be very careful because there is always a slight chance of getting some infection after getting a tattoo. Have you taken your hepatitis vaccine? Was your pericarditis treated with antibiotics? Or was it said to have been caused by fungi?

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I had my hepatitis vaccination. There was no apparent cause of pericarditis like fungi. It is unknown. I did not take any antibiotics. I have solely been treated with Ibuprofen and later Colchicine when we realized I might have been weaning too fast. They want to get me off Ibuprofen eventually because they do not want complications from being on it for too long.

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

If you, unfortunately, get a bad infection during the process of getting a tattoo, it can be fatal to your already fragile heart. If you choose to proceed, then you might go on short antibiotic prophylaxis. I think it might be too early to take such a risk at the moment because you are still being treated for your condition. Best regards.
