What can cause a cold, cough, and a lot of phlegm from the nose?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

This query is regarding my father's health, as right now, we are in my village. For the past 20 days, he has had a cold and very little cough. He is taking antibiotics from a local doctor, but there was no effect on him. So we ran some tests like CBC, uric acid, and sugar before breakfast, and his platelets count was less. So what could be the reason, and what other tests do I have to run? He is fine, not so weak, but a lot of phlegm comes out through his nose. Please help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Your father has had a cough and cold for around two weeks. It has not been improved by an antibiotic course. So I suggest there is a need to investigate with a chest X-ray for further workup to rule out bronchitis if present. Platelet count is low due to infection.

The following are my suggestions for his problem:

  1. You can give him a decongestant tablet course for five days, while you investigate with an X-ray.
  2. Give him one teaspoon of turmeric powder with milk daily.
  3. Drink lots of water to loosen mucus.
  4. Avoid the intake of excess spicy foods.
  5. You can give him vitamin C 500 mg twice daily for five days.

I suggest you consult a pulmonologist for a detailed evaluation.

I hope I have answered your question.

Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards.
