How can I manage acne breakouts after retinol use?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I would like to ask for help regarding the pimples on my face. My breakout started after I used whitening face wash and retinol. I stopped using both products about three weeks ago and have since returned to my previous skincare routine, but the breakout has not improved or faded. Could you please advise me on how to manage or treat this?

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and can understand your concern.

1. Irritation or reaction to whitening face wash and retinol:

Retinol can be irritating, especially when used with certain cleansers that might be too harsh or drying. It can trigger breakouts, especially when first introduced.

2. Post-inflammatory acne flare:

Even though you have stopped using the irritants, your skin may still be in a reactive state and healing slowly.

3. Hydroquinone and Tretinoin toner use:

Hydroquinone and Tretinoin are strong actives. Prolonged use or reintroduction during irritation may worsen redness or bumps if the skin barrier is not healed.

Here is what you can do now -

A. Simplify and soothe -

Temporarily stop RDL toner and any actives. Focus on:

  1. Gentle cleanser (no Salicylic acid or exfoliants).

  2. Moisturizer – Look for ceramide-rich or barrier-repairing types (for example, Cetaphil, CeraVe, Physiogel).

  3. Non-comedogenic sunscreen – Preferably mineral-based (zinc oxide or titanium dioxide).

  4. Look for ingredients like Niacinamide (anti-inflammatory, reduces redness), Panthenol (calms irritation), and Centella asiatica (Cica).

B. Avoid these for now -

  1. Retinol or exfoliating acids.

  2. Alcohol-based toners.

  3. Physical scrubs.

I hope this information helps you.

Thank you and take care.

Regards.
