Is it normal to get a non-itchy pimple on the vulva?
Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I have a pimple on my vulva. It is not itchy, but I am concerned. It is not irritable. I am using pessaries. Kindly advise.
Please suggest.
Thank you.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I read your query and can understand your concern.
Thanks for your message. A single pimple-like bump on the vulva that is not itchy or painful is usually not serious, but let's look at what it could be and when to worry.
Possible causes of a vulvar “pimple” (non-itchy, not irritated):
1. Blocked hair follicle or sebaceous cyst (most likely) - It looks like a small bump or whitehead and may come and go on its own. It is caused by sweat, friction, or shaving.
2. Bartholin's gland cyst - It is located near the vaginal opening (lower sides). It is usually painless unless infected.
3. Fordyce spots - These appear as small, white, or yellowish bumps. These occur as harmless oil glands showing normal variation.
When to monitor vs. when to see a doctor:
Monitor it if it stays small, has no pain, itching, discharge, or spreading, and goes away within one to two weeks. See a doctor if it grows, becomes red, painful, or filled with pus; there is vaginal discharge or burning; you have a fever; or the area becomes swollen; you have multiple bumps, which could suggest genital herpes or other infections (though yours sounds unlike this).
What you can do now:
Keep the area clean and dry. Avoid shaving or waxing until it clears. Wear cotton underwear, and avoid tight clothes. Do not squeeze it, as this can cause infection
About the pessaries:
If you are using antifungal or antibiotic pessaries, they are unlikely to cause a bump, but irritation can sometimes trigger blocked pores.
Let me know the location of the bump (inner/outer labia, near hairline, etc.), if it changes in size, color, or appearance, and I will help you evaluate it further.
I hope this answers your query.
