How do I explain inherited PKD to my children at 34?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am a 34-year-old male with PKD diagnosed after a CT scan showed multiple kidney cysts. My kidney function is still normal, but now I am struggling with something I never expected.

My children are 8 and 11 years old and keep asking questions after overhearing family conversations. I want to be honest without frightening them, especially since there is a possibility they could inherit the condition too. How do I talk to my children about inheriting PKD at 34?

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

It is completely understandable to feel concerned about having this conversation with your children. At ages 8 and 11, children usually do best with simple, honest, and age-appropriate information.

You might explain that you have a kidney condition called polycystic kidney disease (PKD) that causes small cysts to grow in the kidneys, but that your kidneys are working well right now and your doctors are helping you stay healthy.

If they ask whether they could have it too, you can acknowledge that there is a possibility it can run in families while also explaining that many people with polycystic kidney disease (PKD) live full, active lives and that there is no immediate reason for them to be worried.

Encourage them to ask questions and share their feelings, and try to answer honestly without overwhelming them with details they are not ready for. Most importantly, reassure them that they are loved, cared for, and that your focus is on staying healthy and being there for them.

I hope you are satisfied with my answer. For further queries, you can consult me at iCliniq.

Thank you.
