How to manage multiple left kidney cysts in my 10-day-old baby?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

My 10-day-old child has been diagnosed with multiple cysts in his left kidney. His hands get blue, and there is a body sensation at times. I have attached the reports here.

Please advise.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

First, you have to assess the renal functions of both kidneys separately. This has to be done using DTPA and DMSA scan (diethylenetriaminepentacetate and dimercaptosuccinic acid). If the function is nil on the left side, then the further management plan must be decided.

About blue hands, you have to exclude any congenital cardiac anomaly by echocardiography. At present, the baby's renal function tests are normal (attachment removed to protect patient identity), but may deteriorate subsequently. Keep a watch on whether he is feeding well, passing urine normally, or not, and follow up accordingly.

Thank you.
