Do pneumococcal infections worsen heart disease?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My father, who is 72, has been experiencing recurrent pneumococcal infections over the past year and also has chronic heart disease. I am concerned about the potential impact of these infections on his overall health. Could there be long-term complications or an increased risk of serious outcomes? Are there any additional pneumococcal vaccines recommended for older adults with underlying health conditions such as heart disease? Could these infections exacerbate his heart disease or contribute to other health issues?

Please advise.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I am so sorry to hear about your father’s condition.

Could you let me know what specific heart condition he has? Recurrent pneumonia can potentially lead to serious complications such as heart failure, cor pulmonale, lung fibrosis, pleural effusion, and respiratory failure, among others. The recommended vaccine for pneumococcal infections is the pneumococcal vaccine, but I am not sure if individuals aged 70 and above are routinely given this vaccine. It would be best to check the immunization guidelines in your country to confirm.

In addition to the pneumococcal vaccine, your father may also benefit from the influenza vaccine, which can help prevent pneumonia and reduce the risk of complications. I would also like to ask if he has had a chest X-ray and a CT (computed tomography) scan recently, as these could provide more detailed information about his lung health.

There is no specific vaccine for individuals who already have pneumonia and heart disease; the pneumococcal vaccine is the same for everyone. Recurrent pneumonia could worsen his heart condition, so it is crucial that he receives proper treatment. I would strongly recommend a review by a respiratory specialist to assess his condition and guide further management.

I hope he finds the care he needs.

Thank you.
