How to treat pneumococcal pneumonia with lung involvement?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My dad has been diagnosed with pneumococcal disease, and we have received his computed tomography (CT) report, which shows some lobar consolidation in the right lower lobe. Some pleural effusion was also noted (7.0 millimeters). His white blood cell count is 14,300. He has a fever of around 102 degrees fahrenheit and difficulty breathing. Can you help me understand what these results mean and if it is very serious? The doctor prescribed antibiotics, but his condition is not improving much. Should we ask for a different treatment option or another scan to confirm the diagnosis?

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I can understand your concern.

Your dad's computed tomography (CT) findings indicate severe pneumococcal pneumonia, with significant lung involvement. Difficulty breathing suggests that the infection is affecting his lungs considerably. The prescribed antibiotics are standard for this condition, but the lack of improvement raises concern.

It is important to monitor for worsening symptoms, as pleural effusion might require drainage or further evaluation. Ask the doctor about adding supportive care, such as oxygen therapy, and consider repeating imaging tests to assess the response to treatment or check for complications. If there is no improvement soon, it may be necessary to consult a specialist in person for potential alternative treatments or hospitalization.

I hope this advice helps, and I am here for any additional guidance.

Thank you.
