What should diabetics do after a pneumococcal infection?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

My 68-year-old father experienced pneumococcal bacteremia and has been struggling with chronic fatigue ever since. He is diabetic, and I am concerned about the recurrence of pneumococcal infections. How common are such infections in diabetics, and how serious could they be? What precautions should he take to avoid further pneumococcal infections? Could these infections exacerbate his diabetes-related complications?

Please help me.

Thanks.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I can understand your concern.

Diabetes increases susceptibility to pneumococcal infections, including bacteremia, as diabetes weakens the immune system. Pneumococcal infections can also worsen diabetes control by increasing stress on the body. I suggest he get vaccinated with PCV 20 (pneumococcal conjugate vaccine) or PCV15 followed by PPSV23 (pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine) to prevent recurrence. Your father should manage his blood sugar meticulously with a proper dose of medications. It includes Insulin for sugar control, maintaining good hygiene, avoiding smoking, and staying hydrated. Encourage him to have a balanced diet, regular exercise, and prompt medical attention for any infection signs. Close monitoring can reduce the risk of further complications from pneumococcal disease.

I hope this information helps you.

Feel free to ask further queries.

Thank you.
