Is it normal to have greenish sputum with pneumonia meds?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

Two weeks back, I went to the doctor, and he prescribed me tablet Azithromycin, tablet Cetirizine and Pseudoephedrine. But since it did not work, he prescribed me five Ceftriazone injections (500 mg each) and a syrup containing Dextromethorphan, Guaifenesin, and Chlorphenamine. Today is the fourth day of my medication course, and I still have a cough with greenish-yellow sputum, greenish-yellow nasal drip, throat pain, and a headache. Is it normal? How long after pneumonia treatment is it normal to have a runny nose and cough with yellow or greenish sputum? Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com. I can understand your concern. If possible, get a chest x-ray to rule out and know the severity of pneumonia. You may need additional antibiotics because green sputum is suggestive of pseudomonas infection. If the chest x-ray is normal, there is no need to worry about the symptoms. They will pass gradually over three to four weeks. Thank you.
