What are the causes and symptoms of lead poisoning?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I am working on my thesis for university and it is about slow poisoning substances. I have been reading up on a famous personality and his lead poisoning and I am really curious about how lead poisoning actually happens. Can you give me some details on this? Like, how does someone end up getting lead poisoning? I know it can come from things like old paint, and contaminated water, but what else should I be aware of? I also read that lead poisoning can cause a bunch of nasty symptoms. Any insights you have on the medical side of things would really help me out with my research.

Thanks a lot for your help.

Hi,

We welcome you to the icliniq.com family.

I appreciate the confidence you place in me for your healthcare consultation.

Throughout his life, that famous personality suffered from a number of well-documented health issues. Classical music fans will already be aware of his progressive hearing loss, but he was also known to suffer from liver disease and recurrent gastrointestinal issues throughout his life.

The great composer passed away at the age of 56, after a prolonged illness. But the exact cause of that famous personality's death has remained unknown. Now, a new study published in a scientific journal has ruled out one popular theory that lead poisoning caused the composer’s early death by analyzing the deceased hair. It is easy to understand why many hypothesized that the famous personality's early death was caused by lead poisoning, the composer was infamous during his lifetime for his temper, memory lapses, and clumsiness, all signs of acute lead poisoning. In the early 2000s, scientists believed they had proven his death was due to lead poisoning after analysis of a lock of hair revealed extremely high levels of lead.

However, subsequent genomic investigations revealed that this lock of hair most likely belonged to another woman, not him. The same genomic research group recently authenticated several locks of the composer’s hair, as part of a project to sequence his genome. Among these were two locks of hair. Both locks of hair were formerly in the possession of someone else.

I hope that you get your answer.

Please let me know if you want some help.

Thank you.
