I am 44 and have polycystic kidney disease that is progressing much faster than my nephrologist initially predicted when I was diagnosed five years ago.
My kidney function has dropped significantly over the past 18 months, and I am starting to experience more frequent pain from the enlarged cysts pressing against my ribs and other organs. Blood pressure control is becoming increasingly difficult despite being on three different medications, and I am constantly worried about cardiovascular complications.
My kidneys are now so enlarged that they are causing digestive problems and making it uncomfortable to eat normal-sized meals. My father died from kidney failure related to PKD when he was 58, and I am terrified of following the same path and leaving my young children without a parent.
My sleep is disrupted by back pain and the need to urinate frequently throughout the night, leaving me exhausted during the day. My wife is willing to be evaluated as a potential kidney donor, but we are both concerned about the risks to her health and what would happen if the transplant eventually fails.
My work productivity is declining because fatigue and discomfort affect my ability to concentrate for long periods.
