Why is my fiancé having bleeding and discharge after sex?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My fiancée is bleeding after a small intercourse with me, and she is saying that her vaginal discharge and blood are coming in small amounts. She has never bled after sex with me, so is there anything to be worried about?

Kindly help.

Answered by Dr. Ali Osman

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

A small amount of bleeding after intercourse is often not dangerous, especially if it happened after slightly rough sex, first-time deeper penetration, or not enough lubrication.

In many young women, the most common cause is a small vaginal tear or friction irritation, or the cervix being lightly bumped during penetration. This can cause a little blood mixed with discharge. So one light episode is usually not something to panic about. It is worth paying attention to a few things. Common causes include:

  • Small tear or friction injury from intercourse.

  • Not enough lubrication or dryness.

  • Intercourse close to her expected period.

  • Cervical irritation (the cervix can bleed easily).

  • Infection or sexually transmitted infection (STI), such as chlamydia or cervicitis, if there is unusual discharge.

Please get her checked by a doctor or a sexual health clinic if:

  • Bleeding continues after sex or happens again.

  • The amount becomes heavy.

  • She has lower abdominal pain or pelvic pain.

  • Discharge has a bad smell, a yellow or green color, or itching.

  • She has pain during urination.

  • She recently missed a period.

  • Is there any chance of pregnancy?

  • She has a fever.

I would suggest the following:

  • Avoid sex for two to three days to let any small tears heal.

  • Next time, use more foreplay and lubrication.

  • Avoid deep or rough penetration.

  • Monitor whether the bleeding stops within 24 hours.

If it was just a tiny spot and it stopped quickly, it is most often due to minor trauma and settles on its own.

I hope you are satisfied with my answer. For further queries, you can consult me at iCliniq.

Thank you.
