What is the treatment for POTS induced by influenza?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I am a 32-year-old woman who seems to have POTS and was induced by influenza. I am on Ivabradine 5 mg daily and getting enough fluid and salt. I cannot stand up, and I have been suffering from fainting, breathlessness, nausea, and tremors till yesterday. My heart rate when sitting was 80, while when standing it rose to 100 to 130.

Today I was feeling tightness in my chest and nausea, even when my heart rate was 110, and when I stood at 170 for 10 minutes, it stayed high at 140 to 160, now even when sleeping. I have a strange feeling in my chest. Please help.

Thanks.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I can understand your concern.

POTS (postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome) with recent influenza might be the flare-up triggered by a recent viral illness. The worrying signs now are the increased heart rate, whether lying or sitting, chest tightness, and dizziness, which indicate autonomic destabilization.

What is needed now:

  1. Visit the ER (emergency room) and get your ECG (electrocardiogram) done and possibly the adjustment of your medication.

  2. Pertinent examination and laboratory tests to rule out heart disease.

  3. Keep taking fluids, but do it slowly, as it can worsen the symptoms. Monitor your condition.

I hope this information will help you.

Thanks.
