Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I got fever, nausea, and headache. I underestimated it. After three weeks, I suddenly got seizures. I was frightened. The doctor ordered tests and confirmed Powassan virus infection. Now they have given me medicine, and now I am under treatment. But will these seizures prevail lifelong? Will these infections get cure? When will it get cured? I am worried as hell.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

The bite of an infected tick spreads the Powassan virus. The number of reported cases of people sick from the Powassan virus has increased in recent years. There are no vaccines to prevent or specific medicines to treat the disease. The neurologic effects are common, including recurrent headaches, cognitive problems, and focal neurologic deficits. However, the full clinical spectrum is unknown and is still being studied. Diagnosis is primarily based on the blood test by detecting viral-specific immunoglobulin M antibodies followed by confirmatory neutralization antibody tests on the serum or cerebrospinal fluid. Rarely, detecting nucleic acid by reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction or antigen by immunohistochemistry may be useful. Cerebrospinal fluid analysis may be done. Magnetic resonance imaging of the brain may show abnormalities in the deep gray matter, brain stem, and cerebellum without significant enhancement. Please share the test reports based on which this diagnosis was made for you by the doctor. The treatment is symptomatic to prevent dehydration and manage neurological swelling.
