Why is there a high fasting blood glucose level?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My MPV has been high, with a range of 12.1 to 13.9, and my platelets have ranged from 128 to 173 for the past four years. The most recent is an MPV of 13.9 and platelets of 157. I also had a high fasting blood glucose this time of 109. This is the first time that I have had a fasting glucose. My fasting glucose level was 91 a few months back. Any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated. I would also like you to note that I contracted Lyme disease from a tick bite 15 years ago. The antibodies were still active for four years at the level of 2.09. Currently, I am taking Zyrtec 10 mg daily and Clobetasol for skin dermatitis.

Kindly help.

Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand you conern.

Regarding your CBC, we look at all three lines: Hb, WBC, and platelet count. A little variation from individual to individual and with age is common. I can see that you are pretty young. At this moment, I can see that Hb is 13.1, WBC is 3.71, and platelet count is 165. I agree with the few past reports of variation on platelet count and other cells in your case, which happens to all of us (attachment removed to protect patient identity).

To me, it is still not clear why you required two units of blood transfusion in the past. However, at this moment, there is no major concern that I can point out. In the future, if you go anemic, then please get your iron profile, vitamin B12 level, and folic acid level checked (not now).

A fasting sugar of 109 is known as pre-diabetes, but that needs a recheck. Make sure what your HbA1c level is, because a level greater than 6.5 is required to make a diagnosis of type 2 diabetes. Lyme is not an issue for you.

I hope the information helps.

Kindly revert so I can assist you further.

Thank you.
