Does a faint second line in the test kit confirm pregnancy?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am a 22-year-old female, and I want to know whether I might be pregnant. I had vaginal intercourse, and a condom was used every time. During that month, I also took Regestrone tablets to delay my period, one tablet each day for four days. I did get my period after that. However, this month, I have not had my period yet. I usually have a cycle of 24 to 26 days, and I have not had any sexual intercourse since my last period. I am very concerned about the possibility of pregnancy. This morning, I took a urine pregnancy test. Initially, it showed only one line, but after two to three hours, a very faint second line appeared. I am unsure if this indicates pregnancy. I do not wish to continue the pregnancy if I am pregnant, so I would like to know what steps I should take next.

Please help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

Based on what you described, it is very unlikely that you are pregnant. You used condoms, had your period after intercourse, and have not had sex since. Regosterone can delay your next period and cause irregular cycles. A urine pregnancy test should be read within five to ten minutes; a faint line appearing after two to three hours is not reliable and is usually an evaporation line, not a true positive. To be sure, you can repeat the pregnancy test with early morning urine or get a blood test beta-hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin) for confirmation. Try not to worry, it sounds more like a hormonal delay, not pregnancy.

I hope this helps.

Kindly follow up if you have more concerns.

Thank you.
