Is fasting safe during pregnancy?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Can a pregnant woman go on a fast? If she does, then what will be the effects on pregnancy? Does medical science recommend fasting during pregnancy or not? I just got a positive pregnancy test the day before yesterday, so I want to know if a pregnant woman can fast.

Kindly suggest.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

Fasting during pregnancy is a personal choice, but medical science does not generally recommend it, especially in the early weeks when the baby’s development is crucial. The effects of fasting on pregnancy are:

  1. Low blood sugar and weakness can cause dizziness, fatigue, and nausea.
  2. Dehydration can increase the risk of headaches, constipation, or even preterm labor (later in pregnancy).
  3. Nutrient deficiency, because your baby needs a steady supply of nutrients for proper growth, and long fasting can lead to a lack of essential vitamins and minerals.
  4. Some studies suggest fasting might affect fetal growth if the mother is not getting enough nutrients.

Fasting is not suggested for:

  1. Women with morning sickness or nausea.
  2. Those with gestational diabetes or low blood pressure.
  3. If you feel weak, dizzy, or dehydrated.

If you choose to fast, do it safely:

  1. Eat a balanced meal before fasting (including protein, healthy fats, and complex carbs).
  2. Stay hydrated – Drink enough water before and after fasting.
  3. Break your fast with healthy food – Avoid processed or sugary foods.
  4. Listen to your Body – If you feel unwell, stop fasting immediately.

Doctors do not recommend fasting in early pregnancy because nutrition is crucial for your baby’s growth. If fasting is necessary for religious or personal reasons, consult your doctor to ensure it is safe for you and your baby. I hope this helps you.

Thank you.
