Patient's Query

Thanks.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I can understand your concern.
I understand how distressing premature greying can feel, especially at your age. Please know that you are not alone, and in many cases, this condition is manageable.
Canities or premature greying of hair happens due to a combination of factors such as genetics (family history), nutritional deficiencies like vitamin B12, iron, folate, vitamin D, copper, or zinc, mental stress, lack of sleep, hormonal issues such as thyroid problems, and increased oxidative stress from pollution, junk food, and irregular lifestyle.
In many teenagers, nutritional deficiency and stress are the most common and treatable causes these days. Premature greying is not dangerous and does not mean poor health, and in some cases, it can be partly reversed or slowed, especially if the cause is a deficiency, but a genetic cause (that runs in the family) is difficult to reverse.
It is important to get your vitamin B12, iron, and vitamin D levels checked by your local laboratory and thyroid levels only if you have a positive family history of thyroid or if you have any weight loss, weight gain, palpitations, or changes in bowel habits. Deficiencies are very common in teenagers.
If any deficiency is found, proper supplements and a balanced diet with milk, eggs, pulses, green vegetables, fruits, nuts, and seeds can help slow greying and sometimes even lead to partial reversal. I would suggest you take supplements containing copper and B12, like once daily for one to two months.
Copper and vitamin B12 are essential for melanin, the pigment giving hair color, so a deficiency can result in premature greying of hair. Also, avoid heat styling products and harsh hair products, excess sun exposure, and try to manage your stress.
I hope this information is helpful to you.
Thanks.
