My grandad has stage 1 prostate cancer. When to start treatment?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My grandad was just diagnosed with prostate cancer at an early stage, and the doctor did an MRI, PSA test, and rectal exam. They said there are no symptoms right now and suggested just closely monitoring the tumor with regular scans and blood tests. But I am really worried about that; should not the treatment start right away?

Cancer is so scary, and I am terrified it could get worse or even cause death. I love my granddad so much and want the best for him. Is waiting and watching the best option, or should we push for treatment now? I feel so lost.

Please help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and can understand your concern.

I think before advising you something definitive, I need to take a look at your grandfather's reports.

Also, I would recommend you get a biopsy (laboratory test used for testing tissues) report, PSA (prostate-specific antigen) level, and an MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) to look at the cancer.

If it is an early-stage cancer, it can be prevented with proper treatment. Active surveillance can help prevent side effects from surgery or radiation, depending on the patient's medical history. However, another opinion from an oncologist (cancer specialist) might be useful.

I hope this helps.

Thank you, and take care.

Regards.
