What are the advanced prostate cancer treatment options?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My 61-year-old husband has recently received the difficult news that his prostate cancer has become more complex, with signs of potential metastasis. He is struggling to cope with the emotional and physical challenges of this unpredictable diagnosis and has become increasingly withdrawn and reluctant to discuss his condition.

With limited medical insurance coverage, we are exploring all possible treatment options, including experimental therapies, but the financial and emotional strain is overwhelming for our family. We need guidance on managing his treatment, accessing innovative or clinical trial therapies, and maintaining his quality of life. Additionally, we are seeking support to navigate the emotional toll on both him and our family during this challenging time.

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and can understand your concern.

Prostate cancer treatment options include hormone therapy, radical prostatectomy with pelvic lymphadenectomy, external radiation therapy, or internal radiation therapy using radioactive seeds.

Post-treatment side effects may include urinary problems, sexual dysfunction, bowel and rectal issues, swollen legs (lymphedema), or redness of the scrotum.

After treatment, regular follow-ups with a doctor are essential, every three to six months for the first five years, then annually thereafter.

Patients generally experience an improved quality of life 18 to 42 months after treatment, with a life expectancy often exceeding 10 years.

To manage stress and promote emotional well-being, patients are encouraged to practice breathing exercises, listen to calming music, and share their feelings with someone they trust, which can help boost confidence and resilience.

Revert with the answer to assist further.

Thank you and take care.
