Could genital rubbing without penetration cause pregnancy?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I had protected sex yesterday, but before that, I rubbed my genitals against my partner’s penis without a condom for about five to seven minutes, and sometimes the tip of his penis touched my vulva.

I am currently in my luteal phase. Could these actions lead to pregnancy?

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

From what you describe, the chance of pregnancy in this situation is very low. Rubbing genitals together without penetration or ejaculation inside the vagina carries much less risk than unprotected intercourse.

If your partner did not ejaculate on or near the vaginal opening, the likelihood of sperm entering the vagina in numbers high enough to cause pregnancy is extremely small. So you can relax and not stress about it.

Pre-ejaculate fluid can contain sperm in some cases, but the risk is still much lower compared to full intercourse.

Since you were in your luteal phase, which is after ovulation, the fertile window has usually passed. Unless ovulation occurred earlier than expected, the chance of pregnancy is further reduced. So you are safe.

If you are feeling anxious, you can take a pregnancy test about two to three weeks after the incident or after a missed period to be certain. For peace of mind and to avoid similar worries in the future, always use condoms from the start of any sexual contact.

Overall, based on your description, pregnancy is very unlikely. I hope this helps, and feel free to reach out anytime. You can always reach out to me for guidance.

Thank you.
