Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I would like to know about pseudomonas species infection, its treatment and risk factors. Please guide.

Answered by Dr. Alok

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Pseudomonas species are gram negative rods and aerobes. They are present almost everywhere. They are opportunistic, which means they may be normally present as commensal in patients and only cause infection when immunity decreases and patient is sick. For same reason they are most commonly seen in hospital as hospital acquired infection, where sick patients get this infection. They are also seen in medical devices used in healthcare leading to infection. Ciprofloxacin has been widely used to treat this infection. But, due to resistance many newer drugs are used which are also getting resistance slowly. Ceftazidime (Fortaz) is currently used as intravenous for pseudomonas infection in admitted patients, but ultimately it depends on sensitivity of bacteria. Various drugs acting against pseudomonas can be found online, but ultimately it depends on place and local resistance of bacteria.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

How serious is this infection? My father has been diagnosed with very high infection of pseudomonas species infection.

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

Growth is growth, high or low. What matters is the site of infection and immunity of person. If the immunity is good and antibiotics are working, then he must recover soon. Usually, it takes 48 hours minimum for antibiotics to show its effect.

Same symptoms don't mean you have the same problem. Consult a doctor now!
