How to manage psoriasis co-existing with diabetes?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am concerned about my father, who is 62 and has psoriasis and diabetes. The skin condition is getting worse and interfering with his medication. Patches on his feet are making it difficult to walk. We do not know if it is related to his other health issues. Can you provide some guidance on managing both conditions?

Please help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

Managing psoriasis alongside diabetes requires a comprehensive and cautious approach:

Skincare:

  1. Use gentle, fragrance-free moisturizers frequently to prevent cracks and dryness.

  2. Pay extra attention to your feet to avoid infections or complications, especially with diabetes.

Psoriasis treatments:

  1. Topical steroids are effective but should be used cautiously, as they can affect blood sugar.

  2. Calcineurin inhibitors (e.g., Tacrolimus) are safer for delicate areas like the feet.

Diabetes monitoring:

  1. Keep blood sugar levels stable, as poorly managed diabetes can worsen psoriasis symptoms.

Foot care:

  1. Consult a podiatrist for psoriasis patches on the feet to prevent ulcers or secondary infections.

Advanced therapy:

  1. Biologics, such as Adalimumab, may improve both psoriasis symptoms and the inflammation associated with diabetes.

I hope this helps.

Kindly follow up if you have more concerns.

Thank you.
