How to manage psoriasis with HIV?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am a 29-year-old male. My psoriasis has gone crazy since starting antiretrovirals. Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) diagnosis is hard enough, and now skin is falling off. Clusters of differentiation 4 (CD4) count 190 and the infectious disease. The doctor says that the medications cannot be stopped. Patches are present everywhere, and joints are so swollen that they can not work. How to manage?

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and can understand your concern.

Psoriasis can be aggravated by the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). It is difficult to administer oral medicine due to the risk of immunosuppression.

I suggest you do the routine investigations.

  1. The probable diagnosis is psoriasis.

I advise you to do the following:

  1. Halovate (Corticosteroid) cream plus Moisturex (Emollients) cream is to be applied twice daily for body lesions. Phototherapy can be done which is a good option.

Do follow-up after two weeks.

The preventive measures to be taken include:

  1. Avoid alcohol consumption.

Kindly consult a specialist doctor, talk with them, and take medications with their consent.

I hope this helps.

Thank you.
