Patient's Query
Hi doctor,
My younger brother, who is 35, has been battling psoriatic arthritis for a few years now. He has been on various medications, but they do not seem to provide consistent relief. Some days, his joint pain is so severe that he cannot even get out of bed, and it is affecting his work and personal life. He is also dealing with skin flare-ups that make him self-conscious. We are worried about the long-term impact on his health and quality of life. Are there any new treatments or strategies that could help him manage his symptoms more effectively? We are open to exploring different options to improve his situation.
Please help.
Hi,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I understand your concern.
Psoriatic arthritis (PsA) is an inflammatory form of arthritis that affects people with psoriasis, leading to joint pain, swelling, and skin issues. For psoriatic arthritis, treatment usually involves medications that target the immune system.
1. Biologics: These are targeted treatments that can help reduce inflammation by blocking specific proteins involved in the inflammatory process.
2. Janus kinase (JAK) inhibitors: An oral medication that targets enzymes involved in inflammation.
3. Selective PDE4 inhibitors: An oral medication that can help with skin and joint symptoms by reducing inflammation.
Incorporating physical therapy can help with mobility and reduce joint stiffness. Swimming or yoga can help him maintain flexibility without aggravating symptoms. A diet that is rich in anti-inflammatory foods may help reduce inflammation. Avoid processed foods, sugar, and alcohol, which can exacerbate inflammation. Counseling, cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), or support groups may help him manage the psychological burden of his symptoms. Anxiety and stress can worsen PsA. Regular follow-ups with his rheumatologist are a must.
I hope this information helps you.
Revert in case of queries.
