How to overcome swallowing difficulty caused by psoriatic arthritis?
Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I was diagnosed with psoriatic arthritis last year. Recently, I have been experiencing odd symptoms in my mouth and throat. Methotrexate was recommended to me, however, it did not help. I cannot close my lips properly, I cannot swallow properly, and I get the sense that something is trapped in my throat. I had an MRI on my TMJ, which came out normal. What may be causing throat-related symptoms?
Hello,
Welcome back to icliniq.com.
Your throat problems, such as trouble shutting your mouth and swallowing, might be caused by several things. Here are a few examples:
1. Psoriatic arthritis in the mouth: Psoriatic arthritis can affect numerous regions of the body, including the jaw and throat. These symptoms might be connected to your medical condition.
2. Muscle or joint problems: Muscle or joint problems in the jaw or neck area might cause difficulties closing the mouth and swallowing.
3. Inflammation or illness: Throat or oral cavity inflammation or infection can cause discomfort and trouble swallowing.
4. Medication side effects: Some medicines, especially those used to treat psoriatic arthritis, may cause throat and tongue problems.
Because Methotrexate was ineffective, it is important to address any new symptoms with your rheumatologist or a healthcare physician who can do a thorough evaluation. They will advise you on additional tests, such as a laryngoscopy ENT (ear, nose, throat) opinion, to determine the source of your throat issues and design a suitable treatment strategy.
I hope this helps.
Thank you.
