What are a few ways for coping with stress?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My 18-year-old girlfriend has been under a lot of stress for a couple of weeks now. She has divorced parents and a manipulative mother. She faints from stress and has low blood pressure. She faints, even when she gets up too quickly. I did not notice anything strange because she just fainted and woke up after some time, and it was fine, but a couple of days ago, she started losing breath while she was unconscious and started choking. I tried to open her eyes, but I could not open them. Recently, I started to give her mouth-to-mouth every time she was choking, and she was breathing normally. Still, then she started hyperventilating while being unconscious and eventually losing breath again. But it got even worse today. She started to lose breath even while conscious and started gasping for air. She refuses professional assistance because she believes others would view her as being irrational, particularly her mother. I will add that she has also tried self-harming before and is very emotionally unstable. Kindly help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and can understand your concern.

I suggest that all these things are related to stress; such severe stress and family trauma can trigger anxiety (a feeling of fear, dread, and uneasiness), which further leads to anxiety attacks or panic attacks, and then suddenly she loses her breath. I have seen many people with such patients. All these symptoms are due to stress alone, so try to make her comfortable, go out with her, and give her a proper diet, including fruits. The other thing is that we need to rule out asthma (Asthma is a chronic condition that inflames and narrows the airways in the lungs) because asthma is triggered by stress alone. So these are two possible causes.I would suggest talking with a doctor in person; he will check your vitals and prescribe you medicine after ruling out asthma. She will recover after taking medications.

I hope this information will help you.

Kindly revert in case of queries.

Thank you.
