How can post-traumatic stress disorder be effectively managed?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I am a bit worried about my girlfriend. She has been telling me about this thing called dog-related post-traumatic stress disorder (D-PTSD). Apparently, she has been having flashbacks of being chased by a neighbor's dog when she was just a kid, around 7 years old. It has been giving her night terrors, and sometimes she even goes breathless, like she is reliving the whole thing. I did not even know this was a thing, but she seemed pretty shaken up by it. I mean, it has been like 25 years since that incident, but it is still haunting her. She has been avoiding dogs altogether, and I can tell it is taking a toll on her mentally. Is there anything she can do to manage this better?

Please help.

Hello,

I am glad you chose icliniq for your medical-related queries.

I can understand your problem and concern about your girlfriend. Managing post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) triggered by a dog-related incident involves several strategies:

  1. Therapy: Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) or exposure therapy can help desensitize individuals to triggers associated with dogs, gradually reducing anxiety and fear.
  2. Medication: Antidepressants or anti-anxiety medications like tablet Escitalopram 10 mg daily to alleviate symptoms such as anxiety or depression.
  3. Support groups: Joining support groups for individuals with PTSD can provide a sense of community and understanding, as well as opportunities to share experiences and coping strategies.
  4. Emotional support animals (ESAs): For some individuals, having a trained support animal can provide comfort and security.
  5. Lifestyle changes: Engaging in regular exercise practicing relaxation techniques (such as deep breathing or meditation), and maintaining a healthy lifestyle can help manage symptoms.
  6. Avoidance and coping strategies: Learning to identify and avoid triggers associated with dogs, as well as developing coping mechanisms for when exposure is unavoidable, can be helpful.
  7. Education: Understanding PTSD and its symptoms can empower individuals to better manage their condition and seek appropriate support when needed.

You must take her to the nearest psychiatrist for details evaluation and management of her symptoms.

I hope this has helped you. Please feel free to reach me again, in case of further queries.

Thank you.
