Is my father's aggressive behavior a sign of PTSD in adults?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My father has a history of being severely abused, physically and mentally, by his parents. He is a great father and a kind man. Two weeks ago, this switched; he is now angry, aggressive, threatening, and convinced that my family and I are against him.

He once threatened suicide with a gun in his hand, which is currently on an involuntary hold. He has a history of suspected PTSD (flashbacks, nightmares, haunted by childhood abuse).

He is taking narcotic pain pills and beta-blockers. He has suddenly begun drinking aggressively, become violent, and cries about the abuse he sustained frequently.

What could this be, and is the old dad coming back?

Kindly suggest.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

If this change that you have mentioned is sudden, then it is most likely that he needs proper medical attention. He will have to provide me with more details about his behavioral changes and the reasons behind them.

It has nothing to do with what he experienced in the past, since you have mentioned that he was always a good father, so I do not think it has any link with his childhood. I would suggest you motivate him for a consultation so that I can provide him with better advice and medications if needed.

Even psychotherapy alone can help him a lot. Do not worry, soon he will get better, and your old dad is not coming back.

I hope I have cleared all your doubts.

Thank you.

Thank you.
