Can rheumatoid arthritis spread to family members?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My sister, who is 22 years old, has been suffering from rheumatoid arthritis for the last three years and is living with us. I have a two-year-old daughter who is very close to the patient. I am concerned about whether the disease will spread to my daughter or to any of us. What precautions should we take?

Kindly help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Thank you for posting your query.

Rheumatoid arthritis is an inflammatory joint disease that has a genetic predisposition. It is not an infectious disease, so please do not worry. To clarify your doubts, diseases that spread through contact are considered infections, and rheumatoid arthritis is not an infection. Therefore, you can live with your sister without any concern about the disease spreading or any related issues.

Do not hesitate to contact me whenever needed.

Please let me know if you want some help.

Thank you.
