Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I am a married woman with a two-year-old child at home. Recently, my husband got us a pet dog. Considering we have a young child at home, is it necessary for both my child and me to get vaccinated for rabies? What is the appropriate age for getting the rabies vaccine? Can pet dogs transmit rabies? Does one rabies vaccine provide long-term protection? Are there any significant side effects associated with the vaccine? Please help.
Thank you.
Hi,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I read your query and can understand your concern.
Rabies is a disease with a 100 percent mortality rate if infected. It is transmitted through bites or scratches from infected animals such as dogs, cats, and bats.
Since you have a pet dog, I suggest the family should consider pre-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) for rabies due to potential exposure risk. The vaccine has no minimum age requirement, and it generally has no major side effects. Vaccines are readily available and can be obtained from physicians.
After vaccination, antibodies develop in the body and provide long-lasting immunity. Monitoring antibody levels in the blood is recommended for high-risk groups like veterinarians, lab assistants, and zookeepers. Antibody level monitoring can be considered after two years of vaccination for children.
I also suggest consulting with a veterinarian for a comprehensive health check-up of your dog. They are the best resource to recommend appropriate vaccinations for your pet, which can provide an added layer of protection against rabies for your family. Their expertise is invaluable in ensuring the health and safety of your pet and your family.
I hope this helps.

Thank you.
