Can I contract rabies even if I am not bitten or scratched by an infected animal?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I found some stray kittens and the veterinarian said that they had rabies. I did not get bitten or scratched and I do not have any open wounds. Should I be worried?

Thank you.

HI,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I can understand your concern.

The usual mode of transmission of rabies is through the bites of an infected animal or contact with the saliva and nervous system tissue of an infected animal. For rabies to be transmitted, the infected material must breach the body's natural defenses such as skin and mucous membranes. Kindly note that skin and mucous membranes are thin and exposed naturally around the eyes, although theoretically, contact of the saliva of an infected animal with these sites can cause rabies. It is however rare. Since the animals are confirmed to have rabies and you were in contact with them and although you claim not to be bitten or scratched I suggest you go ahead and take the vaccine. This should prevent the illness if any contact you may not be aware of had occurred.

I hope I have been of help.

Thank you.
